Trip to Ireland - 11th April by Marina Gotsens

Monday 11th April

We depart from Dublin and make our first stop at Monasterboice, a monastic settlement dating back to the year 501. This ancient monastery is home to Ireland's best preserved and finest place. It has a cementery with giant Celtic crosses, but I don't like the cementeries although it also has a monumental fully intact Round Tower.
We went on our trip along Northern Ireland, although there weren't any customs between the two countries. When we arrived in Belfast, it was raining and we did the world famous Black Taxi tour to view the Peace Wall and some of the famous political murals.
We saw lots of murals and each taxi driver was a guide and explained us the history of the terrorism in Belfast. From time to time all the taxis stopped and one of them was the guide to explain the most important murals and the most recent ones. we started watching the murals that Protestant people drawed in the walls of their area to protest against Catholic people terrorist acts in Shankill area. Later we went to Falls Road and we saw paintings that showed the opposite, The Catholics against the Protestant terrorist acts and other problems of war in other parts of the world reflected in those wall paintings or murals.
We ended the visit of murals in the four miles wall peace where we wrote a good desire to stop this war between both communities and the peace in general of the world. It was a very tall wall that split both communities that they don't trust each other.

At the end of the visit each driver showed us the highlights of the city including the magnificent City Hall where we took nice pictures, Queen's University, the famous Albert's Clock, we saw the Botanic Gardens greenhouse at the distance and much more all of it interesting and beautiful places. We spent our free time at the Victoria Street, one of the most important comercial streets of Belfast and all about the city centre, I only bought a few souvenirs there. That night we stayed in the charming University Quarter hostel.
